A structural connection occurs between a beam and a column flange at the top of a steel column. A cap plate welds to the top and bottom flanges with a thickness determined by the greater of the connected beam flange thicknesses plus one-quarter inch, maintaining a one-inch minimum. Continuity plates install inside the column web, sized using the larger of the two beam flange thicknesses. Shear tabs weld to the column flange where required to connect the incoming beams.
