A steel beam connects to a hollow structural section column using a pair of L8x4x1/2 angles located on each side of the column. The angles feature two 1-1/2 inch vertical short slot holes and are secured with two 3/4 inch diameter A325 bolts positioned at the bottom of the slots. A three-eighths inch stiffener plate is welded to both sides of the beam web with a 3/16 inch fillet weld on three sides. A five-sixteenth inch fillet weld connects the angles to the beam flange, and a one-quarter inch shim space is provided below the connection. The HSS column is sized per plan, and the connection allows for vertical adjustment using the short slotted holes.
