A reinforced concrete pit or trench features a 1-1/2-inch galvanized steel bar grating spanning 2 feet. The grating bears on galvanized 4x4x1/2-inch structural steel angles measuring 1 foot 11 inches long, secured to the concrete walls with two 1/2-inch diameter by 3-1/2-inch stainless steel concrete screws spaced at 1 foot 6 inches on center on each side. The concrete walls and base slab are reinforced with No. 4 reinforcing bars at 12 inches on center each way typically, resting on undisturbed soil. Hollow structural section guide posts are anchored to the top of the concrete walls using a 3/8-inch by 6-inch by 1-foot-6-inch base plate fastened with two 3/4-inch diameter by 6-inch embedded concrete screws.
