This WUF-W moment connection joins a steel beam to a column using a welded unreinforced flange-welded web configuration. The beam flanges are joined to the column face with complete penetration welds, requiring complete penetration, demand critical welds with backing bars removed and back-gouged. Continuity plates matching the beam flange thickness are installed within the column web, aligned with the beam flanges. A connector plate is bolted to the beam web for erection, with the web connection completed by fillet welds sized at the beam flange thickness plus or minus one-sixteenth inch. Weld access holes are provided at the beam flanges, and a protected zone is designated along the beam length.
