Dimensional limits and clearance criteria apply to a rectangular penetration through the web of a steel beam. The opening is centered along the beam's neutral axis with maximum dimensions restricted to one-sixth of the beam depth by one-sixth of the beam depth unless otherwise noted on plan or schedule. Edge distances and eccentricities are measured from the centerline of the penetration to the support centerline and the beam flanges. A minimum clear distance equal to the beam depth is maintained from the support or point load to the edge of the opening. Corner radii are specified for stress relief at each angle of the cutout.
