This assembly connects a steel beam to a hollow structural section column using a cap plate at the top flange and a base plate at the bottom flange. The plates are sized to the beam flange width and thickness, with the base plate measuring the beam flange width plus one inch minimum and a length of the beam flange width plus three and one-half inches. Two three-quarter-inch diameter bolts secure each flange to the plates. Stiffener plates are installed on each side of the column web, with double plates required where the column continues above. A one-quarter-inch fillet weld is specified for the plate-to-column connection. The assembly maintains a one-half-inch clearance between the plate and the column face.
