Fire protection pipe hangers must be located at the panel points of each open-web steel joist. When pipes are hung parallel to joists, a maximum diameter of four inches may be supported by a single joist, provided the pipe spacing ensures no joist supports more than one pipe. Pipes with a diameter of six inches hung parallel to joists must be spaced to ensure no joist supports more than one pipe, with the load redistributed to a minimum of two joists. Pipes larger than eight inches in diameter hung parallel to a joist, or pipes larger than six inches in diameter hung perpendicular to joists, require review by the engineer of record prior to installation. All hanger spacing must be fifteen feet or less, and the use of beam clamps on the bottom chord of joists or girders is prohibited. These criteria assume branch lines are no greater than two and one-half inch diameter schedule ten pipe spaced at ten feet on center.

PIPE SPACING MUST BE SUFFICIENT SO THAT NO JOIST IS AFFECTED BY MORE THAN ONE PIPE. EXCEPTION: IF COMMUNICATED DURING DESIGN, JOIST LOADING CAN BE MODIFIED TO ACCOUNT FOR PIPE WEIGHTS. • WHEN HUNG PARALLEL TO JOISTS, PIPES WITH A DIAMETER OF 6” SHALL BE SPACED SO THAT NO JOIST IS AFFECTED BY MORE THAN ONE PIPE. IF THIS IS EXCEDED, NOTIFY THE EOR FOR REVIEW. • PIPES GROUPED TOGETHER MUST BE REVIEWED BY EOR FOR SPECIFIC LOADS PRIOR TO JOIST FABRICATION. • HANGERS ARE TO BE SPACED 15'-0” OR LESS. • DO NOT HANG WITH A BEAM CLAMP FROM BOTTOM CHORD OF JOIST OR GIRDER.
