A slab-on-grade control joint detail features a saw cut extending to one-fifth the depth of the slab up to a two-inch maximum. Reinforcing steel continues uninterrupted across the control joint. Because the slab functions as a structural diaphragm, through-cutting or trenching the control joint is strictly prohibited. The contractor must submit a slab-on-grade control joint layout plan for the engineer's review prior to pouring concrete.
