A typical steel column splice connection details the partial-joint-penetration groove weld requirements for the column flanges. The flange weld size is determined by the formula tf divided by 6 plus one-eighth inch for flanges under one and a quarter inches thick, and tf divided by 2 for flanges one and a quarter inches thick or greater, unless noted otherwise. The web weld size is specified as two-thirds of the thickness of the thinner web. Erection plates are provided as required at the splice location.
