A pipe penetrates a checkered plate with a one-inch clearance maintained between the pipe and the plate edge. A one-quarter-inch bent plate or a standard pipe split in halves serves as a sleeve around the pipe. This sleeve is secured to the checkered plate with a three-sixteenth-inch fillet weld. The inside diameter of the sleeve is determined by the pipe size as specified in the design drawings, which range from six inches to twenty-four inches in diameter.
