A structural steel column splice connection for a special moment frame or SFRS column features a flange taper transition. The connection utilizes a complete joint penetration groove weld with back gouging and rewelding, supported by a minimum three-quarter-inch backing plate that may double as a lifting device subject to adequacy checks. Erection bolts are provided as required alongside filler plates to accommodate dimensional discrepancies. Access holes are detailed per standard column weld access requirements, with a minimum two-point-five taper transition slope.
