A control joint in a concrete slab on grade over a granular subbase and compacted subgrade. The joint is formed either as a cast-in control joint or via sawcutting at twenty-four hours, with a minimum depth of one-quarter the slab thickness. Reinforcing bars crossing the joint are cut in an alternating pattern to allow controlled cracking. A general note mandates a maximum joint spacing of twenty-five times the slab thickness or a maximum of four thousand five hundred millimeters, equivalent to fourteen feet ten inches, on center.
