A wide-flange beam connects to a structural steel column flange using a welded moment connection with bolted erection plates. The beam top and bottom flanges connect to the column via demand-critical complete joint penetration welds with weld backing removed, backgouged to sound weld metal, and supplemented by five-sixteenths inch minimum fillet welds. The beam web fastens to the column flange with a plate made of ASTM A572 Grade 50 steel with a minimum thickness of three-eighths of an inch, extending top and bottom by one-eighth of an inch into the overlap with the weld access hole. Erection bolts are installed by the contractor. Continuity plates are provided on each side of the column web aligned with the beam top and bottom flanges.
