An HSS column or wide flange column bears directly onto a wide flange beam sized per plan, utilizing a base plate that is omitted when the column width is less than the beam flange width. Three-eighths-inch thick stiffener plates are welded to each side of the beam web with five-sixteenth-inch fillet welds typical on each side, extending down with a maximum two-inch dimension and coped as required to fit the beam profile. A five-sixteenth-inch fillet weld secures the column base or base plate to the supporting beam flange.
