An incoming beam connects to an HSS column using a 1/2-inch stiffener plate welded with a 1/4-inch fillet weld on three sides. The connection is secured with four 7/8-inch diameter A325 bolts on each side, spaced at 3 inches on center. Cap plates sized 1/2x14 for HSS14 or 1/2x24 for HSS16 are welded to the column centerline with partial joint penetration welds and 5/16-inch fillet welds. Additional plate clearances and dimensions vary by HSS size, with 2 1/2 inches at HSS14 and 3 1/2 inches at HSS16.
