A concrete slab-on-grade crack control joint and a construction joint incorporate slab dowels. The control joint requires a saw-cut, formed, or tooled cut performed on the same day as finishing with a depth equal to one-quarter of the slab thickness. Slab reinforcement stops one inch from the joint on each side, with one-and-one-half-inch clearance. The construction joint connects a previously cast slab and a newly cast slab using slab dowels consisting of either three-quarter-inch diameter by fourteen-inch smooth bars at twelve inches on center or one-quarter-inch by four-and-one-half-inch square diamonds at eighteen inches on center. Number four reinforcing bars are placed on each side, and the joint is filled with concrete after all column dead load is applied.
