A column splice and cap plate connection where the upper column web is oriented perpendicular to the lower column. A thick steel cap plate rests on the mill-ended top of the lower column and is welded with fillet welds sized according to the upper column flange and web thicknesses. A pair of one-half-inch thick stiffener plates are welded to both sides of the lower column web extending one foot four inches down from the cap plate. The upper column rests on the cap plate with milled ends aligned to top of steel elevations per plan. Additional connection plates are utilized as required based on structural schedule specifications.
