A glulam timber beam frames into a structural steel I-beam via a 1/2" thick by 1'-8" wide steel knife plate centered on the glulam beam and welded to the steel beam web with a 1/4" fillet weld on three sides. Three 3/4" diameter bolts secure the timber to the knife plate through vertical slotted holes in the plate, allowing movement. A 5/8" thick by 10" wide steel plate is centered on the underside of the glulam beam with backgouging at the weld. The steel I-beam supports a composite metal deck concrete slab above.
