An HSS post intersects a horizontal HSS member with a shaped cap plate welded at the top using a partial joint penetration weld on near side and far side, supplemented by a quarter-inch fillet weld. A 3/8-inch by 6-inch by 1-foot-2-inch plate, centered on the HSS post each way, connects the post and horizontal member. The face of the HSS post is aligned with the face of the horizontal HSS member, maintaining a maximum 1-inch clearance. Fasteners are spaced with a 3-inch typical gauge and a 1 1/2-inch typical edge distance.
