A welded and bolted splice connection joins two wide-flange steel columns. The assembly utilizes a three-quarter-inch minimum back-up plate, which the contractor may also use as a lifting device subject to verification of adequacy. Complete joint penetration welds join the members, supported by erection bolts as required, filler plates as needed, and back-gouging per AWS D1.1 specifications. A magnified inset detail specifies an access hole ground smooth with a two-and-a-half-inch minimum land as required for erection.
