A wide flange or hollow structural section column is centered on a base plate supported by a concrete foundation, with the base plate sized per the base plate schedule. The surrounding slab on grade features a thickened slab edge and a diamond-shaped isolation joint configuration around the column base. A one-half-inch isolation joint with premolded joint filler creates a thermal and structural break between the column blockout and the surrounding floor slab, maintaining a typical three-inch clearance. A round joint configuration may be used at the contractor's option.
