A column splice between wide flange steel columns of different depths is joined by a 1-1/2 inch thick A572 Grade 50 transition plate. The upper column features a beveled flange as shown on plan and schedule with weld access holes cut at the top and bottom per AWS D1.8. Complete-joint-penetration welds connect each flange, incorporating demand critical welds per general structural notes for inspection requirements. Lift plates are provided on both sides by others and removed from the beveled side of the web. A 4-foot dimension references the finish floor which varies relative to the connection.
