A web doubler plate is welded to the web of a steel column to reinforce the panel zone under heavy framing loads. A beam connects to the column flange, and a gusset plate frames into the connection with a fillet weld sized at one and one-quarter times the doubler plate thickness or an alternative complete joint penetration groove weld per AWS D1.8 Clause 4.3. The edges of the doubler plate receive a three-sixteenths inch minimum weld size, with plate dimensions proportioned using three-quarters times the doubler plate thickness. Section A-A details the cross-sectional profile of the doubler plate attached to the column web between the flanges.
