Two typical concrete slab joint configurations detail edge preparation and load transfer mechanisms. The first detail features a keyed joint at slab mid-depth with a 1V:3H slope and a minimum three-quarter-inch depth, where curing compound is applied as a bond breaker before the adjacent slab is placed and every third reinforcing bar extends across the joint. The second detail utilizes a doweled joint with half-inch diameter by ten-inch smooth steel dowels spaced at sixteen inches on center, having one end greased and aligned perpendicular to the joint. Slab reinforcement is discontinued at the doweled joint unless noted otherwise, and a bond breaker is applied prior to pouring the adjacent slab. Both details rest on a prepared sub-base with under slab preparation and maintain four inches of clearance on both sides of the joint.
