This structural steel detail shows a moment frame beam-to-column connection centered on a hollow structural section column with continuing column above where required. Top and bottom continuity plates interrupt the HSS column and are joined with complete joint penetration welds. These continuity plates match the beam flange thickness plus one-eighth inch with a minimum thickness of one-half inch at fifty ksi yield strength, extending one-half inch beyond the column face where a beam occurs on only one side. Non-frame beams frame into the column using bolted shear tabs on each side. Complete joint penetration welds connect the column to the top and bottom continuity plates.
