An upper and lower hollow structural section column of the same width connect end-to-end with an intermediate cap plate located four feet six inches above the top of the slab. The cap plate thickness equals one and one-half times the hollow structural section wall thickness with a one-inch minimum. Four optional internal locator plates are welded to the cap plate to align the upper column. Complete joint penetration groove welds secure the column ends to the cap plate. The finished column end surface meets the plate flush.
