A W12x35 steel beam frames into an HSS6x3/8 hollow structural section column with a maximum height of four feet six inches. The structural connection utilizes a 1-inch thick by 10-inch wide by 1-foot long A36 plate secured with two 7/8-inch diameter A325 bolts per flange at AISC gauge. A 3/8-inch plate with near-side and far-side welds connects the members, reinforced with fillet welds and a reduced joint penetration weld top and bottom. The base of the HSS column is anchored to a 3/4-inch thick plate using eight 3/4-inch diameter by 6-inch long lag bolts.
