Wide-flange steel beam web penetrations are restricted to the middle one-third of the beam span and must maintain a minimum spacing of twice the penetration diameter from the center of one penetration to another or to the face of a wide-flange support. Unreinforced openings are prohibited within a distance of L/4 from supports unless otherwise approved. Penetrations are sized at three inches in diameter for W12 and W14 shapes and four inches in diameter for W16 shapes and greater. Shear studs are provided at twelve inches on center at beams containing penetrations. Reinforced penetrations incorporate a one-half-inch thick doubler plate welded top and bottom with quarter-inch fillet welds on each side, extending a maximum of six inches beyond the penetration.
