A structural steel beam connects to a hollow structural section column using a welded single plate shear tab. A cap plate is welded to the top of the hollow structural section column, sized three-eighths inch thick for columns six by six inches or smaller, and one-half inch thick for columns seven by seven inches or larger unless noted otherwise. The column wall thickness minus one-eighth inch is specified at the cap plate weld connection.
