A rectangular opening extends through the web of a wide-flange steel beam sized per plan and features reinforcement. Two 3 1/2-inch by 1/2-inch thick horizontal stiffener plates are welded to the sides of the beam web above and below the penetration using 1/4-inch fillet welds. The maximum height of the opening is limited to one-third of the beam depth, with all penetrations subject to confirmation by the structural engineer. Clearances and dimensional limits maintain a maximum opening length of 1 foot 4 1/4 inches and a minimum length of 1 foot 0 inches, with a 1/2-inch vertical spacing from the stiffener plates.
