This detail outlines requirements and geometric restrictions for beam penetrations in structural steel framing. Web penetrations are permitted within the middle one-third of the beam depth and must maintain a minimum distance of two times the beam depth from the centerline of the support. Penetrations are prohibited where any column above occurs within ten feet of the beam end. Clearances from the support must be the greater of D/4 or 4 inches maximum. All beam penetrations must be coordinated with mechanical services and submitted to the structural engineer of record for review.
