A structural steel column bears on a thick base plate welded with five-eighths inch fillet welds to the column flanges and web. The base plate is supported on a three-inch layer of non-shrink grout above a reinforced concrete footing. Four large-diameter anchor bolts extend deep into the footing with bottom nuts bearing against three-quarter by five inch square plate washers. The footing includes continuous grade beam reinforcement, #4 ties at four inches typical, and seven sets of #5 stirrups on each side of the column. A two-inch diameter vent and grout hole is centered in the base plate, and dowels tie the surrounding concrete slab to the footing.
