Utility penetrations through structural steel beam webs must be located within the middle third of the beam depth and span, maintaining a minimum clearance of two times the beam depth from supports and columns. Holes are restricted to a maximum diameter of six inches or one-quarter of the beam depth, whichever is less, and are prohibited entirely in beams shallower than W10 or within ten feet of a column above. Contractors must submit shop drawings indicating exact penetration sizes and locations to the structural engineer of record for review.
