A steel beam frames into a column flange using a shear tab with three bolts. A column cap plate spans the top of the column, sized to match the column or girder width whichever is greater. The beam flange connects to the cap plate with a partial-joint-penetration weld, typically with a thickness equal to 0.75 times the column flange thickness. The web connects to the cap plate with a five-sixteenths-inch fillet weld. Continuity plates are provided on each side of the column web aligned with the beam flanges.
