Two aligned structural steel beams connect end-to-end with a 1-inch maximum typical clearance between their flanges. A pair of connection plates are bolted across the web using twelve 1-inch diameter A325-SC slip-critical bolts on each side. Horizontal stiffener plates measuring 7/8 inches thick match the beam flange width and weld to the top flanges with 5/16-inch fillet welds. Additional plate connections attach to the webs using 1/2-inch fillet welds.
