Plumbing penetrations through steel stud wall framing require a matching steel stud section sistered to the primary stud. The reinforcement member must match the size and thickness of the primary stud and extend twelve inches above and below the center of the penetration. Secure the sistered stud to the primary stud using eight number ten screws spaced at six inches on center. Maximum allowable penetration diameters are one inch for three and five-eighths inch studs and one and one-half inches for six inch studs. Contact the engineer for penetrations exceeding these dimensions.
