Reinforcement of a web penetration in a structural steel beam used for moment frames. Reinforcing plates are applied to both sides of the web matching the beam grade, extending one foot beyond the penetration length on each side. The maximum opening depth "N" is limited to one-half of the beam depth, with a maximum penetration length of two times "N". Fillet welds connect the reinforcing plates to the beam web with a two-inch radius corner transition. A minimum clearance of one-half inch is maintained at the cross-sectional profile.
