A masonry wall expansion joint features horizontal bond beam steel interrupted at the joint, except at the roof diaphragm. Two 1/2-inch diameter by 4-foot-long smooth bars are placed at each bond beam with capped ends to allow 1 inch of movement. Wire tie bars with grease applied to one side of the joint permit slip, while an expansion joint strip is installed per architectural specifications. The joint is sealed on the exterior face with a backer rod and sealant per architectural requirements. Two number 4 vertical reinforcing bars are placed on each side of the joint. Installation notes mandate that joints are omitted in lintels and within 4 feet of wall openings.
