An open web steel joist top chord connects to a column cap plate with one-half-inch erection bolts. A one-half-inch cap plate sits atop the column and provides bearing for the joist members. The connection transfers a joist top chord axial load of four kips service for column stability. Fillet welds secure the joist to the cap plate, with sizes specified as one-quarter-inch for LH series joists and one-eighth-inch for K series joists.
