A concrete slab control joint utilizes diamond-shaped or round steel dowels for load transfer across the joint. For slabs five or six inches thick, a one-quarter-inch by four-and-a-half-inch diamond dowel or a five-eighths-inch by twelve-inch round dowel is specified at twenty-four inches on center. For slabs seven or eight inches thick, a three-eighths-inch by four-and-a-half-inch diamond dowel or a three-quarter-inch by twelve-inch round dowel is used at the same spacing. Round dowels require the exposed end to be lightly greased to allow for movement. A one-sixteenth-inch wide saw cut is required within twenty-four hours of concrete placement, extending to a minimum depth of one-quarter of the slab thickness. A minimum clear cover of two inches is maintained for reinforcement.
