This bridge abutment bearing detail establishes the structural support assembly at the interface between the superstructure and substructure. A steel reinforced elastomeric bearing pad transfers vertical loads from the superstructure while accommodating thermal movement. The sole plate rests above the bearing pad and is secured by anchor bolts embedded into the concrete abutment. Nuts at the bearing are installed finger tight to permit rotation and translation. A one-inch gap is maintained between the structural elements to prevent thermal binding.
