A continuous steel beam bears directly on a three-quarter-inch thick column cap plate measuring one foot ten inches long with a width matching the column flange. The column cap plate is welded to the steel column with a one-quarter-inch fillet weld or American Institute of Steel Construction minimum. The continuous beam connects to the assembly using a full-depth shear plate connection with seven-eighth-inch diameter bolts installed at a typical standard gauge of one and one-half inches.
