A hollow structural section beam connects to a concrete masonry unit wall using a series of steel plates and slotted connections to accommodate horizontal drift. A continuous HSS 6x4x1/2 member features a flat cut web at the near side to allow movement, supported by a bent plate measuring 1/2 inch by 8 inches long in A36 steel with a 2-inch vertical slotted hole for movement. A plate measuring 7x2-3/4x3/8 in A36 steel and a base plate measuring 12x12x5/8 in Grade 50 steel anchor the assembly to the masonry wall. Two continuous #5 reinforcing bars run horizontally through the CMU wall per plan. Fillet welds of 3/16 inch size with a 6-inch minimum length secure the steel components as indicated.
