A steel beam connects to a hollow structural section column using a one-half-inch thick knife plate centered on the column axis. The knife plate is secured with five one-inch diameter A325 pretensioned bolts with a Class A faying surface, spaced across a one-foot four-inch vertical span with two-inch and three-inch typical spacings. Fillet welds connect the knife plate to the supporting HSS column and associated framing. A steel joist and metal deck bear above the column and beam assembly.
