Reinforcing bars are connected using either a mechanical coupler or a welded splice positioned at staggered intervals along adjacent parallel bars. Each splice fitting connects the cut ends of the reinforcing steel within the concrete element. The staggered layout prevents concentrated planes of weakness across adjacent structural reinforcement.
