Typical cap plate connections for hollow structural section columns and beams. A plate matching the hollow structural section wall thickness, with a minimum of one-quarter inch and a maximum of one-half inch typically, is welded to the end of the member. Seal welds are specified around the perimeter with field weld symbols indicated. An alternate detail provides sizing rules based on the wall thickness minus one-sixteenth of an inch with a three-sixteenths inch minimum.
