A column splice connection occurs at the top of a mezzanine level. The assembly incorporates a base plate sized per schedule welded to the column with a 5/16-inch fillet weld, secured by seven-eighths-inch diameter bolts installed with double nuts. A 1-inch thick neoprene washer is positioned beneath the bolt head and installed finger tight to accommodate potential future removal of the mezzanine framing. Where no joist or girder occurs, a 1/2-inch triangular stiffener plate is welded to the underside of the base plate. A note specifies that the column must be evaluated by a structural engineer if the mezzanine framing is removed in the future, at which point the bolts and a new plate washer are to be fully tightened.
