A cantilever steel beam connects to a supporting column using a connection plate and bolts sized per the structural schedule, with a maximum clearance gap of 1/2 inch at the joint. A full-height plate is welded to the beam at the column connection with quarter-inch fillet welds on each flange and the web, and three-sixteenths inch welds at hollow structural sections and pipe columns. The base plate matches the width of the column or beam flange—whichever is greater—with a minimum thickness matching the beam flange, and is secured using four three-quarter-inch diameter anchor bolts, substituting five-eighths-inch diameter bolts when the beam flange is under four inches.
