Concrete reinforcing bar lap splices with specified clear cover and transverse reinforcement. Non-contact lap splices are spaced between one-half inch minimum and eight inches maximum. Bars sized number nine and larger require welding or approved mechanical connectors developing one-125% of specified tensile strength. Adjacent lap splices separated by three inches or less require a 30% increase in lap length. Transverse reinforcement is provided at both ends of the lap splices, and lap locations are staggered when rebar is present at each face.
NOTES: 1. COVER ≤BAR SPACING ASSUMED. COVER IS DISTANCE FROM OUTSIDE FACE OF BLOCK TO EDGE OF BAR. 2. BARS SPLICED BY NON-CONTACT LAP SPLICES SHALL BE SPACED A DISTANCE APART NOT GREATER THAN 1/5 THE REQUIRED LENGTH OF THE LAP SPLICE OR MORE THAN 8". 3. #9 AND LARGER BARS SHALL BE SPLICED BY WELDING OR BY APPROVED MECHANICAL CONNECTORS THAT CAN DEVELOP 125% OF THE SPECIFIED BAR STRENGTH IN TENSION. 4. WHEN ADJACENT LAP SPLICES ARE SEPARATED BY 3" OR LESS, THE REQUIRED LAP LENGTH SHALL BE INCREASED BY 30%. 5. PROVIDE TRANSVERSE REINFORCEMENT AT BOTH ENDS OF LAP SPLICES AS SHOWN IN THE FIGURE BELOW IN ORDER TO USE THE REDUCED LAP SPLICE LENGTH.
