The slab on grade rests on a leveling course of fine-grained aggregate, sandy gravel, or crushed rock over undisturbed soil, with a vapor barrier placed above the base course. A one-eighth-inch premolded strip is installed flush with the surface for formed joints. Saw-cut joints require a one-eighth-inch cut performed on the same day as the pour, filled subsequently with joint sealer. Joint depths are dimensioned to one-quarter of the slab thickness (T/4). Base course thickness is subject to increase as required by the geotechnical engineer for wet weather construction.
